The Week Ahead

The Week Ahead

The endgame is fast approaching. Pretty soon the German government – now the established de facto ruler of the eurozone – will throw in the towel and say to Athens, ‘enough is enough.’ Germany’s robust finance minister, Wolfgang Schäuble, told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper at the weekend that Greece can’t be a “bottomless pit.” The Greek parliament may have passed fresh promises of austerity, but ‘Athens burns’ was the result and Greek politicians have a regrettable habit of promising much but doing little. This time will be no different. So batten down the hatches. Greece will be forced out of the euro, chaos in currency (and commodity) markets will ensue…but the dust will eventually settle and life will return to being more normal but very different. Welcome back the drachma, maybe the escudo, possibly the peseta – although probably not the lira.
